Queen Street

"Queen Street" (Nassau, The Bahamas) by Alton R. Lowe

Tucked away in the center of Nassau is Queen Street, a mix of thirteen properties, including the American Embassy. In the early years of my career, I was fortunate enough to rent a small apartment on the street during my annual show.

In this painting the viewer can see one of the grand old houses, a mansion really, which makes Queen Street so attractive. At the end of the street are steps cut into the hillside leading up to West Hill Street and the Graycliff Hotel (built in 1740 by the feared pirate, John Graycliff).

At the other end of the street lies the old British Colonial Hotel where I mounted my first annual exhibition. I have many fond memories of those days. While the street is blocked off today for security of the American Embassy, one can enter the street by walking down the steps from West Hill Street. It is worth the time and makes for a pleasant stroll in the early morning.
